Vintage Artek Nojatuoli 46 – Alvar Aalto, 1946

A beautiful and timeless Artek Armchair 46, a classic of Finnish modernism designed by Alvar Aalto in 1946. This particular vintage example dates approximately from the 1960s–70s.

Model 46 is considerably rarer than many other Artek chairs and armchairs from the same period. One of its distinctive features is the fully upholstered seat and backrest. Unlike many of Aalto’s classic models, where comfort is provided by webbing or stretched fabric, this model features proper soft upholstery. This makes Armchair 46 a genuinely comfortable lounge chair rather than simply a chair with armrests.

The chair has been fully and professionally restored. The wooden frame has been carefully restored with respect for its age and original character. The natural vintage patina of the rattan elements on the armrests has been preserved.

The seat and backrest have been completely reupholstered in high-quality Johanna Gullichsen fabric. The refined geometric structure of the textile complements Aalto’s understated design language and the warm tone of the birch frame.

Thanks to its upholstered construction and comfortable seating position, the armchair works beautifully in a living room, bedroom, study or reading corner. At the same time, it remains a distinctive and interesting example of Finnish vintage design.
