A rare pair of antique chairs crafted from solid oak, made in Northern or Central Europe, most likely around the mid-19th century.
Over many decades, the dense old oak has developed an exceptionally deep dark-brown, almost black tone and a beautiful natural patina. Despite their age, the wood remains smooth, while the chairs themselves are substantial, solid and remarkably stable.
Particularly striking are the entirely hand-carved decorative details. The tall backrests feature botanical motifs, a stylised flower reminiscent of a sunflower, and small carved human faces at the top. These projecting decorative elements are particularly vulnerable and are often damaged or lost on antique furniture. On this pair, they have survived remarkably well.
The construction itself is equally interesting. Rather than being straight, the rear legs have a carefully shaped curve — a technically demanding detail when working with hard oak and one that required considerable skill and a precise understanding of balance and structural stability. Although the chairs may appear relatively restrained at first glance, closer inspection reveals the complexity of their craftsmanship and numerous carefully considered details.
The frames were assembled using traditional cabinetmaking techniques: without modern metal fasteners, using traditional joinery and wooden pegs. The chairs have been gently cleaned while preserving their age, original surface and natural patina.
